SERC Leads Talks at INCOSE International Workshop

Sharing Expertise with the Systems Community
[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”5/6″][vc_column_text]Researchers from the Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) maintained an engaged and insightful presence at the annual INCOSE International Workshop in Torrance, California, on January 27-30.
SERC Chief Scientist Tom McDermott gave a keynote speech on model-based systems engineering with “A Decade of Digital Engineering Research, Insights Past and Future from the Systems Engineering Research Center.” McDermott also led a workshop on “Safer Complex Systems: Integration of Diverse Models for Safer Complex Systems.”
Dr. Nicole Hutchison of Stevens Institute of Technology also co-led another workshop on safer complex systems with Dr. Jon Wade. With Dr. Art Pyster (George Mason University) and INCOSE’s Christopher Hoffman, she chaired meetings for the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK) Governing Board and Editorial Board. Hutchison is editor-in-chief of the SEBoK, and Hoffman is the managing editor.
Two days before the IW began, Hutchison organized a workshop with her fellow researchers to discuss a SERC project on digital simulations, in collaboration with the Defense Acquisition University. Hutchison also conducted one of the strategy sessions managed by David Long, who serves as INCOSE’s director of strategy and also on the SERC Advisory Board.
During the IW, SERC researchers Dr. Alejandro Salado (University of Arizona) and Dr. Paul Wach (Virginia Tech) led a discussion on the Systems Engineering & Architecting Research Network (SEANET). Salado also led a discussion on the INCOSE Academic Council.
In March, Salado will preside as conference chair of the next major systems engineering event where SERC researchers will share their expertise, the Conference on Systems Engineering (CSER). SERC Executive Director Dinesh Verma and Dr. Azad Madni of the SERC Research Council will resume their roles as honorary general chairs, which harkens to their work to establish CSER and ultimately the SERC.
