New Research Task Awarded: Quantum Technologies for Armament Systems

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Research task ‘ART-20: Quantum Technologies for Armament Systems’ kicked off on June 30, 2021, with Principal Investigator Dr. Yuping Huang, Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens), leading his current team of 14 Co-Principal Investigators. This task is slated to be a two-year effort with room to double the team of researchers. The task contains seven main tasks in support of the research and development objectives in areas of quantum photonics and related technologies at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center. The tasks are categorized as follows:

disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_column_text]On [award date] research task WRT-1045: “Digital Engineering Implications on Decision Making Process” was awarded. This research effort is a brand new year-long effort led by Principal Investigator, Dr. Sam Kovacic, alongside co-Principal Investigators,  Dr. Andre Sousa-Poza and Dr. Jiang Li, all from Old Dominion University. 

To rapidly infuse advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twin (DT), 3D printing, etc., and to gain and maintain advantages into the rapidly changing digital and connected environment, the US Department of Defense (DoD) delivered their Digital Engineering Strategy (DES) [1], to transform engineering practice into digital engineering. Military Sealift Command (MSC), a command within the US Navy, is actively employing digital engineering techniques within their ship maintenance division. MSC owns and operates over 100 ships and has performed maintenance services since 1949. With over 70 years of experience, MSC has documented maintenance and repairs in numerous electronic formats.

MSC has invested considerable capital and resources in responding to the Digital Engineering Strategy initiative. Starting the long journey to the DT, the virtual representation to the physical ship, it is the expectation that the DT will increase the capability of ship component analysis and increase ship availability. This expectation is best realized in the digitization of their virtual technical library (VTL), host to the schematics, and drawings of all the ships in MSC’s inventory. The VTL is currently composed of 2D renderings, images, and text of logical ‘slices’ of the ship. The many data forms create challenges in the holistic interpretation of the ship both at the micro (manufactured) and macro-level (structure) and require that each image conform to a 2D vector file to ensure data quality and are noise free. Ultimately this 2D vector file must be consumed by a 3D AutoCAD tool to provide the necessary visualization for a DT.

DT enables a prescriptive maintenance strategy, ultimately being able to prognose the systems through its life cycle using knowledge-based decision processes to optimize maintenance based on a prescriptive analysis of the maintenance process to meet system purpose. RCM employs a prescriptive strategy used to determine what maintenance tasks are needed across the system life cycle. MSC, like many organizations, is challenged to manage preventive care and keep pace with the complexity of operational assets, RCM provides a viable methodology for prognosis maintenance for MSC.

This research studies the activities necessary for MSC reliability centered maintenance, specifically the development of a DT model and the exploration of a decision space to augment the DT. This study is in two phases: The first phase is a feasibility study for converting multiple data files into a consumable 2D vector file as a critical step for developing a DT model. The second phase is a feasibility study that explores the key capabilities for a prescriptive maintenance strategy in a decision process to predict the degradation of the holistic system and its contribution to mission.

Within the SERC Research Strategy, the research addresses directly the Enterprise and Systems of Systems (ESOS) and Systems Engineering Management Transformation (SEMT) research areas, particularly the Enterprise Transformation and Digital Engineering program areas.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
