Our Network

The DoD established SERC in 2008 as the first networked University Affiliated Research Center, modernizing a UARC model from the 1940s and opening new pathways for academia and government to collaborate. Led by Stevens Institute of Technology, SERC connects the DoD with experts on campuses across the country.

What We Do

SERC experts work with DoD entities to conduct sponsored research tasks applying digital engineering, test and evaluation, architecting, AI and other tools to develop adaptable and scalable solutions.

SERC researchers have longstanding collaboration with the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Army DEVCOM Armaments Center, Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation, and other entities with the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and DoD.

The Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) is not an official component of the Department of Defense or any military service.

SERC for Defense Acquisition

In 2020, SERC responded to mandates from Congress and the DoD by expanding with the Acquisition Innovation Research Center (AIRC) and applying systems thinking to advance defense acquisition. AIRC runs on the SERC network and operational structure to conduct research, develop tools and offer recommendations for the DoD on analyzing data, incorporating AI, program piloting, training the next generation of acquisition professionals and more.
